Hybrid Hump Day – note holder

I have a thing for writing notes to myself.  There is something about putting a pen to paper and writing my to do list or my shopping list.  I enjoy the act of writing the list and watching the ink flow on to the page.  Yeah, I know I’m a little strange but I bet there are others of you out there that feel the same.

I created this cute little note holder just so that I’d always have a piece of paper when I need it.  These would make super cute teacher gifts too!!!

Supplies:
Anything You Can Do digital kit by Eva Kipler
Kraft cardstock
Trimmer w/ cutting and scoring blade and scissors
Double stick tape, tape runner or glue stick
Ribbon
Blank paper or 2 3/4″ square notepad

1.  Create the base of the project by cutting a 7.5 inch square from the kraft cardstock. Score cardstock at 2 inches on all four sides.  Create the back panel of the holder by cutting a 3.5 inch wide by 5.5 inch tall piece of kraft cardstock.

2.  Using scissors, make vetical cuts on the scored line on all four sides to create a flap in each corner of the cardstock.  Guide below show in black where to score and in red where to cut AFTER you score.
Cutting template

3.  Fold in towards middle on each of the scored lines. Secure the flaps to the inside sides of the box using double stick tape.  Rotate so that the cut side is facing you.  Cut the rectangular notch out of the front panel of the bottom box after it is assembled so you get all the layers.  A punch would work really well here!

4.  Open your editting software and create a printing page.  Chose your favorite Eva kit to decorate your box.  The wrap around the bottom sides of the box is created using two rectangular pices.  The first being 11 inches long x 1.75 inches tall, the second is 3..5 inches long and 1.75 inches tall.  (This gives you room to trim your finished pieces to the size you wish).  For the back panel, create a rectangle that is 3 inches long by 4.5 inches tall.  Create a decorative pieces to place on your finished panel.  Print the decorative piece sheet and trim all pieces.

Here’s what my printing sheet looked like -(note: shadows are there so you can see the edges better, don’t shadow your decorative pieces.  It’s easier to trim without the shadow!)

5. Position the bottom box so that the cut side faces you.  Using the longest decorative strip, determine your desired width and trim.  Then wrap the piece around the box staring on the left side and going around the back and to the right side.  Use the short decorative piece to wrap the front (you wil need to hand cut the opening to match the opening in the bottom box front).  Trim the back panel piece to fit your panel as desired.  Add your decorative elements.  Round corners (optional) and then using double stick tape, adhere the back panel to the inside, back of your bottom box.

6.  Decorate with embellishments such a ribbons, buttons, flowers, etc.  Fill with cut pieces of note paper and you are done!

Mini Notebook Mania!!

The back to school sales have begun and be still my heart – all sorts of cool supplies are super cheap and so tempting! One of my back to school favs are mini notebooks. Walgreens had them on special for 19 cents each this week – so I couldn’t resist. What could be more fun that creating a bunch of mini notebooks to have ready to tuck in my purse or in my kids’ bags? They also make great little gifties when you just a need a little something for someone that’s been sweet.
Let’s get crafting!

Supplies -

Mini composition book or mini spiral bound notebook
Pliers (for the metal bound spiral notebooks)
Your favorite Eva Digital Kits I used:
It’s My World
Swooning
Forecast: Sunny
Presentation Paper
Double stick tape or glue stick
Paper trimmer
embellishments
ruler

1. Measure the front and back cover of your mini notebook (if you wish to keep the back chipboard, then skip that part).
My top opening memo book measured – 5″(l) x 3″ (w);
My mini composition book measured 4.5″(l) x 4.25″(w), plus I need a 4.5″ x .75″ piece to cover the spine; and
My side opening memo book measured 5″(l) x 3″9w)

2. Open a blank canvas in your photo editing software the size of a sheet of paper: 8.5″ x 11″. Use your favorite Eva Kipler kits to create your front and back covers. My print sheets looked like this:

Top Opening Memo Book

Mini Composition Book

Side Opening Memo Book

3. Print your mini notebook front and back designs on a heavier weight presentation paper or photo paper and trim to size (you needpaper that can take a little wear for longevity)

4. For the spiral notebooks you have to remove the spiral spine to add your cover.  Use a binder clip and clip all the internal pages of your notebook together so nothing gets out of place.  Then, use a pair of pliers and carefully bend the end of the metal spiral so that it will allow you wind the spiral out of the paper.

5.  Either glue the new cover on top of the old cover using glue stick or double stick tape OR replace the old cover with the new cover.

6.  Use a hole punch to punch the holes where the spiral binding goes back in and then wind the spiral wire back into the notebook and bend the little end in.

7.  For composition books, glue the front cover to the front of the book and the back cover to the back of the book. Then adhere the spine piece over the side, overlapping both the front and back covers.  Trim any edges that hang over the edge of the cover.

The finished products up close -

Love You Top Spiral Bound Mini Notebook – I added some card stock to the cover for some extra flair and included a scalloped punched border.  Eva Kit: Swooning

It’s My World Mini Composition Book – I added a ribbon with some little beads on it, attached to the inside back cover and now I have a little place holder and decoration.  Eva Kit: It’s My World

Dream Journal – I simply tied some ribbon to the spiral for a little extra color.  Eva Kit:  Forecast: Sunny.

It’s easy to add extra embellishments to jazz up these little notebooks, glitter, ribbon, buttons and traditional scrapbooking elements can easily be added to the cover.  For longevity you might even decide to laminate your spiral bound covers before you put the metal spiral back in to the notebook.

These little notebooks make awesome little gifts think: Dream journals, books I’ve read journals, everyday little notes.  If you want to be really creative you could replace the inside pages with your own custom checklists or calendar or even scrapbook pages!  The possibilities are endless.  If you decide to give this project a try link me up in the comments.  I’d love to see what you create!

Wednesday Word Art Freebie!

Happy Wednesday! The work week is halfway over and the weekend is in sight! Hooray!

I don’t know if you feel this way, but sometimes the greatest challenge I face when creating a layout is coming up with a clever title to match my photos. I often fall back to generic titles I’ve used over and over again – Love, Adore, Cute – you get the picture! So for your freebie today I thought I’d lift that titling burden off of you for at least one layout and I came up with a piece of wordart for you! The quote is from Confucius and the alpha and element I used came from Eva’s recent kit “Boho Chic.” I think the quote goes perfectly with the spirited feel of this kit. You can pick up Boho Chic at Sweet Shoppe Designs by clicking on the preview below.

Here is your word art freebie! (Blue background is for preview purposes only.) Click on the preview to download. Link us up here if you put the word art to use! We’d love to see your pages!

June Monthly Challenge

It that time again – time for this month’s challenge and we’re mixing things up!  Instead of lifting a Diva, this month we are going hybrid.  With summer basically here there are lots of reasons to send cards – kids at camp, Father’s Day, 4th of July, teacher thank you cards…etc.  This month we challenge to you create a hybrid card with your favorite Eva kit.  To make this fun, one item on your card needs to have dimension.  It can be a popped up image, the addition of ribbon, buttons, flowers – whatever makes the card what you want it to be.

To play along post your card in the Eva Kipler Gallery at the Sweet Shoppe and then link me up in the comments below.  Make sure you tell us what part of your card has dimension.  You have until the end of June to enter.  The first week in July, Eva’s Divas will vote on their favorite card and that person will win a special prize.

Here is some inspiration for you:

Happy Father’s Day Card by Heather featuring Eva’s Love My Daddy kit
Heather used pop dots on the journaling spot and the Prima flowers.

Heather’s card using Little Big Man – got to love the cute popped out frog!

Juli’s Fishing You a Great Day card featuring Eva’s Keeping It Cool By The Pool kit.
I’ve used stick on gems and folded a scrap piece of paper to make the fish stick out.

A second card from Juli (me) featuring Eva’s Annabella kit.
The ribbon and the googlie eye are my added dimension.

By Lilach using Viva La Diva kit

By Lilach using Easy Going kit – love the green flower for dimension!

By Lilach using Eva’s Little Big Man kit – love the layers and the matching envelope!

Now that you’ve had some inspiration it’s time to get out there and get crafting – you can’t win if you don’t enter.  I can’t wait to see all the entries!

Hybrid Personalized Gift Bags

May is gift giving season! Between graduations, upcoming weddings, showers, birthdays, Mother’s Day and Father’s Day around the corner there always seems to be a need for a quick way to wrap up a gift. Today I’ve got a simple and easy hybrid project that will liven up any gift bag and make the gift you are giving that much more personalized.

Credits – Jackson bag- In Cahoots, Pay It Forward, Clip Me! Scalloped Edges.  Happy Birthday Mom Bag – Love My Daddy
Supplies:
Your favorite Eva Kipler digital kits
White copy/printer paper (nothing fancy)
Printer
Scissors, trimmer, decorative punches
Colored cardstock
Gift bags with a handle (got mine at the Dollar Tree in 2pks)
Glue stick/adhesive

1. To start measure the top of your gift bag opening to determine what sized colored cardstock you are going to mount your personalized decoration to. My bags are 8″ wide, so a standard piece of 8.5″ x 11″ cardstock, folded in half will work perfectly.

2. Open your photo editting software and create a 8.5″ x 11″ canvas to work on. Create a new layer and draw a line across the page at 5.5″ to determine the half way point of the paper. Create your personalized message to fit on half of your paper (my size was 8″ x 5″ – see below).

3. Print out your design on white copy paper. Trim/cut out the design.

4. Fold your card stock in half shortway. Lay the folded card stock over the top of the bag and use a pair of scissors to cut a thin strip of card stock off the fold line for your handle to go through.

Up close of finished bag with handle slot cut -

5. Adhere your decorative piece to the front of the cardstock flap created in step 4. Slide your gift in the bag and then slide the personalized bag topper through the handles so it sits on the top of the bag. Voila! Your project is complete.

To take this project to the next level you can create a complimentary design to put on the back of the cardstock (for the back of the bag). You can also print out matching pieces (like my star) to add to the front of the bag for decoration. This project can be customized for any gift giving occassion and for a variety of different sized bags.

Vacation Memories – Personalized Hybrid Album

Hi Eva fans! It’s Diva Juli here with another easy hybrid project sure to impress.  I just got back from our family Spring Break vacation.  We took a family cruise to the Eastern Carribean and now I have lots and lots and lots of pictures to show off.  I always like to have pictures on my desk but my cube walls are getting crowded – my solution – a free standing personalized cruise album.

I basically altered a not so appealing flip top album I picked up at the Dollar Tree and made it into my own hybrid creation – complete with ribbon and the name of the ship we sailed on.  This project makes a great gift too!

Here’s the album I started with:

Here’s the finished project:

Supplies:
Little Big Man digital kit by Eva Kipler
Flip Top Photo Album (Dollar Tree)
Heavy Weight Glossy Photo Paper
Glue stick
Hole Punch (Crop-a-Dile)
Ribbon
Pliers

1.  Remove the spiral ring from the flip top photo album by bending the plastic end to allow you to unwind the ring off the album.  (When I bent mine the end broke off- but not to worry, it actually made the project easier).

2.  Measure the top piece to determine the size of your altered/hybrid front.  Mine measured 6 1/4″ x 4  3/4″.  Open a canvas in your photo editting software and design your front piece. I designed my front as one flat piece with shadows to create layers.  I personalized the design by adding the name of the ship on to the boat to make my final project more sentimental.  You could very easily design each layer and then mix your digital elements with cardstock and traditional scrapbook supplies to create your own unqiue front.

3.  Print your project on to heavy weight glossy photo paper and use a paper trimmer to cut out the design.

4.  Apply glue stick to the back of the decorative front and attach to the original front of the album for support and guide hole for punching.

5.  Turn the glued front over and use the holes from the original front as a guide to punch the spiral binding holes.  I used a Crop-a-Dile to make small holes.

6.  Wind the spiral binding back through the album with the new front on top.  When complete add tied ribbons to every other  spiral for a decorative touch.

7.  Fill the album with your favorite photos and you’re done!

I hope you’ll give this fun project a try – it would make an awesome gift filled with matching 4×6 brag book pages!

Hybrid Fun – Jelly Bean Dispenser

Really, what is the best part about Easter – is it the cute little girl spring dresses?  Is it bouquets of spring flowers?  Or..candy???  Maybe it’s jelly beans!!!  I love jelly beans. My kids love the sour patch variety and hubby is a black jelly bean fan.  For me – any color will do. :)   So what better focus for a hybrid project than – jelly beans?

Supplies:
Pick Me Up digital kit by Eva Kipler
Candy Dispenser Template by Kelleigh Ratzlaff
Photo paper or cardstock
Scissors
Double stick tape/adhesive
Black Pen
Ribbon
Jelly Beans

1.  Open the Candy Dispenser digital template in your photo editing software.  Delete the optional wrap from the template.

2.  Using the whole box layer as a clipping mask, clip the yellow with white polka dot paper (Pick Me Up kit).  Paste it back on to the original template.

3.  Select the lines layer and using the Color and Saturation tool, turn all the lines white.  Delete any unnecessary layers.  Keep in mind the scoring lines are going to be barely visible.  If this scares you then make your lines a color that compliments your project.

4.  Using this free template, clip a beak and two feet from the orange solid paper from Eva’s Pick Me Up kit.  Paste on to the template sheet where you deleted the wrap (top part of the page).

5.  Print your box, beak and feet on to a heavy weight paper.  I used everyday, semi-gloss photo paper.

6.  Using scissors, cut out all the pieces, score the project (very important for a professional looking finished project) and assemble the box following the provided instructions.  I used double stick tape to keep my box together.  Keep the top flap open so you can fill with candy!!!  Jelly beans, and other small candies work best (like M&Ms).

7. Adhere the feet and beak to the front of the box.  Using a black pen drawn on the eyes.   Using double stick tape adhere ribbon to back of box so it sticks up over the top of the box like feathers.  After filling the box with candy use a small piece of double stick tape to keep the top flap closed.

You could mix this up and use white paper and add ears, feet and a cotton tail for a bunny.  You could even add some feathers instead of ribbon for plumage to the top of this cute little or even wings.  I hope you give this cute little project a try – just try not to eat the whole bag of jelly beans.  (Not that I would do that or anything. )

Happy Spring!

Little Big Man spotlight

Hey friends!  Diva Jen here.

So . . . how ya been?  :)

I guess it’s because my one child is a boy, but I am really drawn to Eva’s February 27th release, “Little Big Man.”  It’s such a lovely combination of boy colors, and the kit can work for baby boys AND big boys.

Lately whenever I’m scrolling through Eva’s designer inspiration gallery at the Sweet Shoppe, my eye goes right to the pages that use this kit!

The frogs, in particular, totally crack me up.

Here are four layouts that I adore:

Lucky Boy, by pomi

Seek Laughter by Lena Brandenburg

Love you Tons, by kscwgirl

Bikin’ Boy by sprauncey1

Here’s the link again to this kit at the Sweet Shoppe!

Happy scrapping!

Spotlight is on Sara!!

I decided I would Spotlight our wonderful Sara!! (yes, I’m a baaaaaaaaad girl and this is a day late :P )

…….

First off, can you give us a brief intro into you? You know the basics; kids, marriage, where you live…

I am 33, I live in Olathe KS with my husband Jeff and our two kids Abby (6) and Joey (3). I work outside the home as an insurance agent.

How long have you been scrapping and how did you get started? How on earth do you manage so many teams and still be such a wonderful scrapper? I have been scrapping since March of 2007. I started out making sig tags and got dragged into the scrapping world by a couple friends and I love it. I manage the teams mainly due to not everyone releasing things at the same time I’ve been very lucky in my team choices and I work for some incredible designers and have made awesome friendships. Also, I don’t sleep a lot.

What usually inspires you? the Sweet Shoppe challenges. I’m kind of lost without them.

Do you have a favorite kit? My favorite kit of Eva’s is retired.. it was her scoop with Lauren Grier, Plummy Plummy In My Tummy. I that kit soooo much. Eva says I’m the only one that liked it.

Love23
If you had to pick one kit that best described YOU, what would it be and why? Viva La Diva. I’ m not so much a diva, but my name means Princess, and that kit has some of my favorite colors in it.

A Different Perspective – Clip Me!

So often as digiscrappers we buy templates and tools to help us create our layouts but only use them on a few layouts here and there and then forget we have the product.  Today I want to challenge you to take a look at those tools you haven’t picked up in a while and use them in a different way.

Eva not only offers digital kits; she also has a great collection called Clip Me! that let’s you use squares, circles and scallops to add unique designs to your layouts.  It’s easy to look at these tools as simple clipping masks, however, with a little bit of creativity you can find new ways to use tools to add some spice to your memories.

Eva’s Clip Me! Round  Shapes
evak-clipme-main

Get creative like Leila – She used a circle to crop out the Clip Me! Round Shapes to use as an accent behind the photo.  What a great way to make a visual pop on any layout and super easy to do!

Eva’s Clip Me! Square  Shapes
ekipler-clipmesquare-prev

Cut it up!  Becky cut up the squares and arranged them around her page for more movement and visual interest.  With the ability to recolor or clip out of any paper this techinque has endless possibilities!

Looking for a way to fill up a background to give more visual focus to your photo? SmallMoments use the larger sized clipping mask as a background pattern.  By removing the middle part of the page your eye is naturally drawn in to the dynamic title work and the photo – again an easy way to mix things up!
its-a-bird-web

So how are you going to mix things up?  Get out those not so often used Digiscrapping tools and try something new.

Also check out Eva’s newest version in her “Clip Me” Series.
